How to auto-reply to YouTube comments with AI

Apps work with comments through the YouTube Data API v3. Reading comments uses commentThreads.list, and posting a reply uses comments.insert, which creates a reply to an existing comment.

Posting needs the channel owner’s permission, given through Google sign-in with the youtube.force-ssl scope. It’s a sensitive scope, so an app that other people use needs Google’s verification before it can serve more than 100 users.

Every app also has a daily quota. By default, Google gives a project 10,000 units a day for most calls, plus 100 video uploads. Listing comment threads costs 1 unit and each reply costs 50, so on the default quota replies alone top out at about 200 a day (Google’s quota costs, checked 28 September 2026).

Whatever tool posts them, replies have to follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines, including its spam rules. Large numbers of identical or repetitive replies are the pattern to avoid.

• Approve first. The AI drafts, a person reads, edits and posts. Slower, but nothing public goes out unread. Best while you learn what the AI writes, and on channels that get sensitive questions.
• Automatic. Replies post as soon as they’re written. Hands-off, but a wrong answer stays public until someone notices it.

A common approach is to start with approval and switch a channel to automatic once the drafts rarely need changes.

Reply by hand. Open your channel’s comments in YouTube Studio and reply under each one. It’s free and personal, and it takes time every day.

Build it yourself. If you’re comfortable with code, the pipeline looks like this:

   Create a Google Cloud project and enable the YouTube Data API v3.

   Set up OAuth so the owner can grant the youtube.force-ssl scope. Plan for Google’s verification if anyone else will use your app.

   Fetch new comments on a schedule

   Call commentThreads.list for each video, newest first, and keep the top-level comments you haven’t seen.

   Write each reply with a language model

   Give the model your business facts and your rules, and ask for a short reply to the comment.

   Call comments.insert with snippet.parentId set to the comment’s ID.

   Keep a record

   Store the comment IDs you’ve answered so you never reply twice, skip your own channel’s comments, and watch your quota.

Use an automation tool. General-purpose automation tools can chain a YouTube step, an AI step and a reply step. They use the same API, so the same permission and quota rules apply.

   Short, and based on your services, prices and hours. Convoro is instructed to answer only from your profile and to point people to you for anything else.

   In Approve first mode, drafts wait under Replies to approve on the Posts tab. Edit one if you like, then click Approve & post or Dismiss. In Automatic mode, the reply posts straight away.

• It replies only on the five most recent videos Convoro published for you. Older videos, and videos uploaded another way, aren’t covered.
• It checks every 15 minutes, or when you press Sync, so replies aren’t instant.
• It answers top-level comments. It doesn’t read or join the replies under a comment.
• It replies and nothing else: it doesn’t like, heart, pin, hide or delete comments.
• YouTube limits uploads per app, not per channel. At YouTube’s default allowance, that’s about 100 uploads a day shared by everyone who posts through Convoro.
• AI can get things wrong. Start in Approve first and keep your business profile up to date.

These examples are written for a fictional spa. A good reply answers the actual question, briefly, with a true fact.

What to avoid:

• The same line on every comment. It reads as spam, and YouTube’s spam rules cover repetitive comments.
• A link in every reply.
• Prices, hours or promises that aren’t true. Convoro answers from your profile, so keep it current.
• Arguing with critics or answering abuse. In Approve first mode, dismiss the draft and decide for yourself.
• Medical, legal or financial advice in a public reply. Ask the person to contact you directly.

• YouTube shows a vertical video under three minutes as a Short automatically. There’s no separate Shorts upload, and Convoro’s AI videos are vertical 9:16, so they land as Shorts.
• Convoro uses the first line of your caption as the title, cut to YouTube’s 100-character limit, and the full caption as the description.
• YouTube has no image posts through its API, so Convoro posts only videos there.
• Deleting a video in the Convoro dashboard deletes it on YouTube too.
